Symphony of Hanoi

Presentation

After a few last days of hard work we presented all our finished products to lecturers of the Conservatory and the Cinema Stage College. We were pleased to hear that they liked our work. The lecturer of the Conservatory wants to use the Symphony of Hanoi as school material, which is great news for us.

In the evening we went out to have a goodbye dinner and some drinks with everybody that participated in our project. Click here for some pictures.

This is the music video of our own hip hop track. The lyrics were written and performed by Vietnamese rapper Kenchou. The title means: Where did you earn that money?

We are working on a videoclip for our very own hip hop track. The beats will be mixed with traditional instruments and vietnamese rap. The video will be shot on a market, with the camera rigged to the arms of different people.

Symphony of Hanoi

In the last 2 weeks Babak and Daniel continued to work on the composition for this music piece. Bang and Minh were very busy with their job and had to accompany a group of swedish students as well. Yesterday we finally had the chance again to work on the symphony with the entire team. The composing work is finished as well as the score. We discussed several possible ways of working, in order to translate the notes into sound. Recording a whole orchestra is time consuming and too expensive. So we decided to use sample libraries and add one real instrument to each instrument section in order to make it sound more realistically.

We encountered many software problems and hope that we get a decent sample library to work on our laptops in the coming days.

Reuse of cultural heritage
The idea here is to use an old traditional vietnamese song, cut it up and rearrange it. In fact a simple method. In combination with a groovy beat it should transform into a music piece that is more accessible for young people here in Vietnam.

Traditional music was the only music that could be heard in Vietnam for a long time, but today young people have access to a wider range of musical genres. Old songs often consist of a theme that is repeated many times with little variations. However, next to that, the performances and recordings of this cultural heritage are evidence of devoted musicians performing meaningful lyrics and melodies.

Considering that, it is stimulating to reuse this music and put it into a more modern context.

Visual support
Next to the other projects the filmcrew is planning to make a concept to support the sound visually. Since we are working on different projects at the same time it should be an effectieve concept that is not very time consuming.

Trong Quan

This is a short story about how mr. Thao Giang single-handedly changed the face of Trong Quan music. Forever.

Sacrifice is a short documentary about Phuong. She left her village to study traditional music Xẩm in Hanoi. We filmed in the centre of traditional music. Beside Xẩm music, Trong Quan music is practised here as well. Our next movie will be about Trong Quan.

This is a small on-the-set-video from the day we recorded the Xam and Trong Quan performances (see previous post).

Planning two portraits

We are going to make two small portraits, both within the realm of traditional Vietnamese music. One will be be about a young Xam musician and the other about one of the traditional instruments used for Trong Quan music. Together we made scripts and storyboards for the two products. During the weekend we will film two performances and, hopefully, an interview with the musician.

Chúng tôi đã lên kế hoạch về thực hiện những chân dung nhỏ về nghệ sĩ Thao Giang ( hoặc giới thiệu nhạc cụ Trống Quân với sự tham gia của nghệ sĩ Thao Giang) và chân dung một nữ nghệ sĩ trẻ yêu thích hát Xẩm. Chúng tôi đã phân nhóm để viết kịch bản và vẽ Storyboard, nếu mọi việc tiến hành tốt như đã định vào cuối tuần này thì có lẽ vào tuần sau hi vọng chúng tôi có thể cho các bạn xem những đoạn clip nhỏ đó trên blog này.
